Giant Paintings on view at 425 Market Street in San Francisco
The exhibition "Mitchell Johnson: Giant Paintings from New England, California and Newfoundland" March 17-May 30, 2025 opens today
My exhibition at 425 Market Street in San Francisco started today, March 17, and continues through May 30, 2025. 425 Market Street is a skyscraper and the lobby has two beautiful display areas that are open to the public. During normal business hours you can enter the building on either Fremont Street or through the courtyard entrance. After hours and weekends, you’ll enter at Fremont Street. The building is a ten minute walk from SFMOMA. Read about the skyscraper here.
There’s a great Tunisian restaurant next door to the skyscraper, the Sales Force Tower is 30 yards away. This is San Francisco’s business district. Its a very busy part of San Francisco where many of my clients work and hold meetings strangely enough, with my clients from the east coast. I am lucky to show here. Thank you Jan Casey.
There are seven large scale paintings in this exhibit, the largest being 78x120 inches, and three small paintings, all connected to the theme of New England, California, Newfoundland. Not many public spaces or galleries can accommodate such large paintings and having shown here seven years ago and sold a number of paintings, I was very eager to do this again.
After twenty fives years of showing in galleries I started to work more independently in 2012, developing partnerships with The New York Times and later with the Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, Artforum and most recently, The Financial Times. This exhibit will receive random foot traffic but also lots of destination foot traffic because of a large national ad campaign. If you see the show and post photos, please use the hashtag, #mitchelljohnson. You can see images and videos of the installation on my instagram account and my Facebook account. If you are interested in buying a painting, you should email through the address on my website. Painting prices range from $9,000-$150,000. There are no prints of my work. If someone tries to sell you a Mitchell Johnson print, it is a forgery. Posters are available at Truro Center for the Arts. Available paintings are only viewable through email correspondence as noted on my website.
Read a Donald Kuspit review of the exhibition in Whitehot Magazine.
There’s an exhibition announcement with images in Hyperallergic.
The 2014 monograph, Color as Content, is sold out and available only as a collector’s item. Copies occasionally surface on Amazon. Limited copies of the 2022 paperback, Mitchell Johnson Nothing and Change, are still in print.
A complete thirty-year bibliography of articles and interviews is available under the news tab on my website. Thanks for following this blog.
