Mitchell Johnson at Galerie Mercier Paris
"Small Paintings", is on view May 20-24, 2025 at 40 Rue de L'Universite
I will be exhibiting small paintings at Galerie Mercier in Paris for five days, May 20-24, 2025. I’m at the gallery, Saturday, May 24, 4-6pm, for the closing reception. (I’ll also be there Thursday afternoon, 3:00-4:00.) This show includes compositions from San Francisco, Paris, Newfoundland and New York City. I’ve been visiting Paris and painting in France since 1989 when I was a graduate painting student at Parsons School of Design in New York City. The thirteen paintings at Galerie Mercier are intimate works spanning the last 7 years portraying familiar scenes transformed by my particular take on color and scale.
The painting above, “Horse and Sunflowers,” 2025, 16x26 inches (41/66cm) was in the May 11 New York Times Magazine and will be viewable through the front window of the gallery, even when the gallery is closed.
If you visit my exhibit, you can also stop by 48 Rue de Lille, just a few minutes away and look at a Paris landmark. Enter if the door is ajar. 48 Rue de Lille is where Edward Hopper lived in 1906 when he first went to Paris. Below is one of his Rue de Lille paintings. I wrote about Hopper’s Paris paintings in an earlier post:
Edward Hopper in Paris
I’m not a huge Edward Hopper fan but I love his early paintings of Paris. These paintings capture a unique feeling still available in the center of Paris and they are free of the …
I think Hopper’s paintings, his approach to composition and his color, are very connected to Félix Vallotton, a Swiss painter who I greatly admire. The retrospective “Vallotton Forever” opens in Lausanne in October.
I hope you’ll get to see the exhibition in Paris. If you want to see which paintings in the show are available, email mitchell.catalog@gmail.com.
