Below is a self-portrait I made in Meyreuil in 1989 when I left Parsons School of Design in NYC for a semester of independent study in Europe. I left very abruptly, following a hunch, and strictly by chance ended up in the village, Meyreuil, just southeast of Aix-en-Provence.
This early painting is included with six more recent paintings in a one day pop-up exhibit in the Marais. The address is 24 Rue Charlot and I’ll be in the gallery all day, 11-6. Please stop by and say hello. If you’re in the south of France, I’ll be giving a talk about my experience in Meyreuil on Friday, September 28, 2025, at 6pm. You can reserve a ticket here. I’m doing a color demonstration in Meyreuil, Saturday morning, but I believe the tickets are sold-out. Going down memory lane.
The Bonvista painting above will be included in the pop-up in Paris. Also is included is this 1989 landscape from Meyreuil. Quite a difference, right?
The legendary art critic, Donald Kuspit, wrote about my early Meyreuil paintings in this article in WhiteHot Magazine last year. It talks about the struggles, the ups and downs, I experienced in Meyreuil. Finally, after 36 years, one of the Meyreuil landscapes is being shown in Paris.
