New Paris Paintings
Menlo Park exhibit of Paris paintings at Flea Street Restaurant, July 8-August 26, 2025
If you live in Menlo Park, California, you’ve probably seen my paintings at Flea Street restaurant, where I’ve been showing off and on for 15 years. It’s nice to be able to display paintings in a local place frequented by both my Bay Area collectors and many of my east coast collectors that come to Silicon Valley on business. I can show whatever I want to and change the paintings throughout the show as they sell. I usually include both new and older work to provide context. I show some of the paintings which I have set aside, that I don’t want to sell, an option not available in a gallery. This local venue paired with my national print advertising in The New York Times Magazine, New Yorker and WSJ. Magazine means someone is always encountering my work every day. As the art world changes, and many galleries continue to close, I’m grateful to have this alternative business plan.
Last year during my museum retrospective at Villa Les Camellias in Cap D’Ail, France, I did a TV interview with MonacoInfo. The interviewer ended by asking what I would be doing next. Without thinking, I blurted out “I’m going to rent an apartment in Paris!” And so we did. The Paris paintings in this new show in Menlo Park are a result of my 2024-2025 stay in Paris’s 11th arrondissement.
I frequently walked from our apartment on Rue de Nice down to the Seine crossing the Pont de Sully, then over to the Jardin de Luxembourg and back through the Marais. Part of the Sully Bridge has an iron railing and depending on the time of day, and the weather, the green railing will almost match the color of the Seine. A good reminder that there is no “water color”-instead endless possibilities of appearance. Likewise, the color of the reflecting pool in the Luxembourg is constantly changing making the color of people’s clothes and the rental sailboats appear different at different moments of light. For decades I have studied the paintings in the Paris museums, but in 2024-2025, the city became my main focus and I barely entered the busy museums.
