Absolutely brilliant insight about learning to see paintings rather than locations. That shift from trying to capture what a place looks like to focusing on forms and color relationships is where the real magic happens, and reminds me of struggling with the same thing when I was trying plein air work last summmer. The part about how yellow wheat fields in Tuscany always looked too dark until other colors were placed alongside it perfectly illustrates how context determines everything in color work. One detail that really stood out was the willingness to scrape off entire sections if even a single tree doesnt work compositionally.

It’s easy to fall in love with your paintings because they certainly show that you paint what you love.
